Who Built Stonehenge? Who built Stonehenge is not exactly known. Although we are not sure who the original makers were, we do know that it wasn't built by extraterrestials (it was built by ingenious humans); it wasn't built by the Druids (the Druids appeared much later in the historical record); and it wasn't built by the Romans (in fact, the Romans might have inflicted some damage to Stonehenge when they were purging the Druids for resisting the Empire in A.D. 61.) Today, when a building, bridge or other structure is built we know who designed it, who pays for it, who builds it and its intended use. For instance, we know that The Empire State Building in New York City was designed by Shreve, Lamb, and Harmon; was built to be used as office space; and was constructed in about a year's time in 1932. Today scientists still aren't sure who built Stonehenge and its intended use, but they do know that it was built in three main stages over a period of 1,500 years! Over that immense period of time, various groups of people inhabited the plains around Stonehenge and contributed to its construction. If a generation is considered to be 33 years, then Stonehenge was constructed over the span of 45 generations! The Druids are most identified with Stonehenge today. |
